Fans of BBC’s Sherlock can easily agree that one of the most wonderful things about the series is the banter between characters.
There’s a bit of snark – okay…a lot of it – mixed in with some heavy sarcasm and even some wholesome heartwarming dialogue. It’s a show you can watch alone or with your best friends. We prefer the latter and we may or may not incorporate some drinking games along the way.
We also try to throw some Sherlock quotes into our daily conversations. If not daily, as often as possible. You can always tell when someone else is a fan of Sherlock, they share that look when you tell them they look cool with their mysterious cheekbones and upturned collar.
Since we’ve been reflecting on our favorite Sherlock quotes, we decided to compile 11 of our favorites to share with you.
Quotes by Sherlock Holmes
1. – “John, I don’t have friends, I have one.”
This may have come from a place of groveling to John Watson, but in the same breath, it was actually really sweet. Sherlock cares about John, enough to let him in in a way he’s never done before.
This one is pretty self-explanatory, and at the same time, it’s got that Sherlock snark we’ve all grown to love. Had he not said do your research after, we could see him finishing that off with a ‘thank you very much’. You know what we’re saying…you can picture it too.
3. – “I may be on the side of the angels, but don’t think for one second that I am one of them.”
This comes from a conversation where Sherlock is telling Moritary not to doubt him. He assures him, if a handshake in hell is what he’s looking for, he won’t be disappointed. When Moritary tells him he’s too ordinary…on the side of angels, this is Sherlock’s (perfect) response.
4. – “Don’t talk out loud, you lower the IQ of the whole street.”
This quote really needs no explanation, and it’s one that you can easily relate to. At least, we can. Sometimes you just end up talking to someone who…well…you wish you weren’t stuck talking to.

4. – “Right, okay. You’re unattached, just like me. Fine. Good… no, I’m not asking.”
This quote came at a bit of an awkward conversational moment between John and Sherlock. Trying to find out if Sherlock was dating, John asked if he had a girlfriend. When he responded that it wasn’t really his area, John asked if he had a boyfriend.
Of course, he says he’s got no boyfriend either but he did assume John was interested after his question. Needless to say…the awkward moment hit. They moved past it, though. Like good pals do.
Some fans still ship the two, but it’s probably best to find fanfiction to read if you’re looking for their love story. The creator of the series says we won’t see it on their show.
We’re only a little bummed about it.
5. – “I don’t shave for Sherlock Holmes.”
If you’re a Sherlock fan, you know about the Johnstache. Even if you aren’t a fan, chances are you’ve seen this quote on t-shirts or blogs and wanted to figure out the meaning behind it.
Turns out, the quote comes from Banter with Mary about that infamous mustache. He simply does not shave for Sherlock Holmes.
6. – “We solve crimes, I blog about it, and he forgets his pants.”
In terms of solving crime, blogging, and forgetting pants – we’re not sure we see the problem with it. Isn’t it boring to be a totally proper adult all the time?
This bit of conversation happened when Sherlock and John were laughing in Buckingham Palace before Mycroft heard them and asked if they could ‘behave like grown-ups’.
7. Sherlock: “You had a row with a machine?” John: “Sort of. It sat there and I shouted abuse at it.”
Ever had those moments where you type in your pin number at the bank or Starbucks or Target and the machine thinks you’re wrong? You know you’re not…you visit Starbucks more than you care to admit and it works every other time. Except for this one time, where the line behind you is growing and you’re getting super anxious?
This is how we picture John when he had that row with the machine, and we understand his frustration 100%.
Quotes by James Moriarty
8. – “Honey, you should see me in a crown.”
This is another one of those self-explanatory quotes, and it’s another of our most favorite. James is confident, he’s cool, he’s smart and he knows what he does best. He’s always wearing a crown, even if you don’t see it sitting upon his head.
9. – “Long live the king.”
Long live James Moriarty. Does it need any other explanation than that?
10. – “Every fairy tale needs a good old-fashioned villain.”
There are very few people in this world who are all good. James knows he isn’t one of them, in fact, he embraces it. Every fairy tale does need a villain…every hero needs an enemy.
Quotes by Mrs. Hudson
11. Mrs. Hudson – “A nice murder. That’ll cheer you up.”
Mrs. Hudson knows Sherlock. She knows that what may ‘cheer him up’ might not be the same pot of tea she’d brew for everyone, but what works…works. He investigates crimes, he’s not scared of a good murder, it makes his brain tic instead.
It was hard to narrow it down to just 11, we could have easily gone on all day. The truth is, at the end of each Sherlock episode you watch, you could pick out a line or two that just stick.
